Kroger: No More Double Coupons in Cincinnati Region

krogerbetterIf you’ve followed couponing for any length of time, you are most likely aware of the uproar in Kroger’s Texas region when they ceased double coupons last year.

Well, it is now upon us. Kroger’s Cincinnati Region has just made the decision to cease doubles and triples as of March 1st!  If you are in that part of the country, please know that this includes Cincinnati, Dayton and areas along the western part of Ohio. Check out the map at Surviving the Stores to see exactly where this region is. As always, call your store or regional division to see if your particular store is affected. Again, this change will not affect MOST OF OHIO as the majority of the state is in the Columbus region. It may, however, be a harbinger of things to come.

If you are looking for a Kroger alternative, please check out my post A Newbies Guide to Aldi! I’m totally in love with Aldi and now that they are offering some gluten free and organic products, I’m sold. No couponing needed.

If you are wondering if you are in the Cincinnati/Dayton division or want to contact the company personally, the contact info is below. Each Kroger/Kroger Affiliate region operates separately from the company at large. Each region will be making their own decisions regarding coupons so be sure to contact the division and not the corporate offices.

How do you feel about this couponing change? Rumor has it that overall prices drop when double/triple coupons are taken out of the equation. We shall see soon enough.

Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

what you need better

I’m becoming one of those!
Whenever I would hear of people making their own ____(fill in the blank here)___, I would roll my eyes and assume I’d never get my act together enough to make it happen. Then came my couponing slump. Yep, we all have them. Right? I’m not alone here? It’s a hard habit to stay on for long periods of time without wanting to just hit Kroger, no prep needed and spend! Thankfully my Aldi obsession came along just about the time my couponing started to wane! Aldi allowed me to grocery shop, without coupons!, and still save tons! I’m a huge Aldi fan for that reason and I’ve yet to find a product that I don’t like at Aldi…although their gum is pretty terrible. Chewable but terrible.

Watching my stash of laundry detergent get low, I decided to bite the bullet and make my own. Guess what? It’s easy!
what you need

Shopping List:
Borax
Washing Soda (NOT BAKING SODA)
Essential oil (scent of your choice) this does not have to be the expensive therapeutic kind. I paid $2.99 for mine.
1 bar of Ivory soap or Fels Naphtha (If you don’t want to grate your soap, use Ivory dish washing liquid. It is more expensive costing $2.50ish instead of a bar of soap for less than a dollar but you don’t have to grate Ivory dish washing liquid so it saves you a step).
nice mid pic
In a large pot, put in 12 cups of water, 1 cup of Borax, 1 cup of Washing Soda and grate 1 bar of Ivory soap. Mix this and heat, wait for a boil. While this is boiling for 15 minutes, put 2 quarts of hot water in a bucket. (I used a bin because I wanted a top for storage purposes.) Next, mix the soap (hot off the stove) with the hot water in the bucket. Then add cold water. I think I added 2 gallons of cold water. Add desired amount of scented essential oil.  I used the Sweet Pea scent(althought it says “Sweat Pea” on Amazon for some reason!)  in Fragrance Oil – Eternal 6 Pack Favorites of Essence – Blueberry, Bubblegum, Mango Madness, Bahamaberry & Melon, Sweat Pea, Watermelon – 10 ml – Scented Oil.  This is a 6 pack set if you’re not sure what scent you are wanting. You can also buy many of these scents one bottle at a time.

Let it sit for 24 hours and then be sure to stir it before each use.
Fill detergent bottles with your homemade detergent so it’s easy to access. Put the rest of it in storage until you need to fill up another bottle.
Your finished product should look like this. It’s a thicker consistency but it isn’t solid.
finished product
Mine is setting now and I’ll be able to use it tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes! I haven’t done the math at how much I’ll be saving but I’m guessing this costs me $.50/gallon or less to make. If that’s the case, I’m saving about $5 per gallon. That’s a pretty decent savings over the course of a year considering I do one load per day.  I’ll be making hand soap next so stay tuned.

Easy Recipe: Chicken and Stuffing Crockpot Style

IMAG3303This could be the easiest meal on the planet! Craving comfort foods with the cold weather upon us? I have the perfect remedy. I call it Chicken and stuffing, crockpot style!

Ingredients: 4 Chicken breasts, 1 can of cream of chicken soup, 1 box of your favorite Stove Top stuffing, 16 ounces of chicken broth (or one boullion cube plus 8 oz of water) and a slow cooker! Combine all ingredients except the chicken in a bowl and mix together. Put the chicken at the bottom of the pot. Warning, if your chicken is frozen you might want to cook it alone for a few hours first. Then add your stuffing/broth/cream of chicken soup mixture on top of the chicken. Cook for four to seven hours. Mine was ready after 4 hours but your chicken may take longer to cook depending on temperature and thickness.

Result? Dinner that everyone in my family loved. The kids put it on a tortilla…they would put everything on a tortilla if they could. I served it with a spinach salad and broccoli. It was the perfect winter time dinner. Let me know if you try it and how it turns out!
