With 3 tweenagers in my house, I’ve been racking my brain for interesting gift ideas. Here’s what I’ve found. Most will serve kids ages 8-13 years old. Now my only problem is narrowing down the list!
1.
Laser Maze Logic Game
is targeted for ages 8 to 15. The game uses logic to complete a series of lasers. Here’s what one review has to say about Laser Maze Logic Game. “Very fun game. With 6 different mirrors on the board and pieces which refract the light into 2 beams, it gets extremely challenging in later levels.” by reviewer Trevor Myles, Amazon.
2.
Magna-Tiles® Clear Colors 32 Piece Set
is all the rage among the little builders. Don’t want to spend this much on a building set like this? Look at an off brand like Magformers Rainbow 30 Piece Set
. You’ll save a bit of money AND it gets excellent reviews!
3.
LEGO Mindstorms EV3 31313
looks like so much fun. If Santa were to bring this one, I might be having some fun with it! This one is not cheap but with a touch sensor, color sensor, infrared sensor and 550+ LEGO Technic element, this is one technical toy with a lot to teach a child. Here’s one review from Amazon, “My daughters and I are LOVING this. They’re 5 and 8, so we’re not doing the programming end of things, but you can load the finalized programs onto your brick and just enjoy the building process and playing with your creations. My 5-year old keeps asking me “When are we going to build another robot!!” Looks like LEGO Mindstorms will go as simple or technical as you want to take it. My son works with something similar in math class. He absolutely loves it and is begging for a “robot”.
4.
So, if LEGO Mindstorms interests you but it’s not in the budget, check out OWI Robotic Arm Edge
. This one looks so cool! Build and then program your own robotic arm! Here’s what an Amazon reviewer has to say, “This was a great item for my son. He is 11 and had no problem putting it together. Good quality, Great price.”
5.
Elenco Snap Circuits SC-300 Physics Kit
is a personal favorite in our home. My kids (ages 7 and 9 at the time) received this exact same kit for Christmas. What I LOVE about this gift idea is that it goes the distance. Snap Circuits gets pulled out of the closet on a monthly basis (at least) and my kids are learning electronics and physics! In fact, I was in a high school the other day and 16 year olds were carrying around electronic boards very similar to this. What a great way for your kids to be entertained AND get them ready for high school! Got little ones? Try Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Kit
for kids 5-8. Here’s a review from Amazon. “Some of the projects are build a door bell, siren, flashing circuit activated by sound, water alarm, etc. These are great projects for you and your child to enjoy. My daughter loves this kit.”
6.
Spirograph Deluxe Design Set
is a fun one, I think. I remember these from my childhood and I just know my tweenage kids would love spirograph! Imagine the art work that could come from this fun gift idea. This one will stand the test of time, too. This might end up under my tree! Maybe you can program the robot to draw with the Spirograph!
7.
Jenga Classic Game
is a can’t lose game! There’s a reason the call it classic! This game will be around for years to come! Fun family entertainment for hours! Can’t beat that with a house full of tween/teenagers!
8.
Superior Tumble Tower - Giant - OVER 5ft Tall During Play
looks like the funnest thing ever!!! This Superior Tumble Tower is the same idea as the Jenga game above BUT it is over 5 feet tall when it’s fully built! WHAT??? How awesome is that!
9.
SmartLab Toys ReCon 6.0 Programmable Rover
is another fun robotic idea with some great reviews. Priced at $62.20 today (shipped), it fits in many budgets. Here’s what one Amazon review has to say about this product. “My son loves this robot. I like that he has to read the instructions and follow the step in order to program it. Much better than mindless video games.”
10.
This would not be an accurate Christmas gift idea list without at least one piece of sporting equipment. This Wilson NFL MVP Junior Football with Pump and Tee, Brown
is a favorite of my sons. They like that it’s a “REAL” NFL football but it’s also the perfect size for tweenage hands! They can pretend their Drew Brees in the backyard with an NFL football that fits them perfectly. And it’s not just for boys! My daughter loves this football, too, and brings it to school with her quite often.
What’s on your Christmas list? I’d love to hear some more fun ideas for the tween/teenager in your life.
